A shocking 18 million acres of forest are laid bare every year, that is the rough size of Panama. Deforestation is the process of destroying and eliminating a forest. The most common methods used to achieve deforestation are, burning of trees and clear cutting, these methods leave the land totally barren. Deforestation is done in order to use the land for housing, urbanization, cattle ranching, farming, making commercial items, such as, paper and furniture. Removal of trees does much harm to the soil and water supply. Forest soil is moist, this is due from tree coverage, blocking out the sun. Consequently, removal of the trees causes the soil to dry out (National Geographic). Trees perpetuate the water cycle by returning water vapor back into the atmosphere. Tree roots greatly stabilize both soil and water, without these roots, water quickly washes away the soil, carrying many nutrients and minerals with it. Deforestation also causes water pollution. Tree roots not only hold the soil in place but help filter out pollutants in the water, without these roots pollutants quickly find their way into our water supply systems. The greatest impact deforestation has is no doubt on the animal and plant kingdom, covering over 70% of the forest (World Wildlife).
